Setting Up Your SmartPhone for CHAT


The CHAT function in SmarterMail version 12 is an XMPP client based on standards developed by the XMPP Standards Foundation. on a JABBER based client. More information about Jabber, and the XMPP Jabber clients is available at Jabber.org

Jabber clients can be downloaded from the XMPP Clients Download page.

Once you have downloaded and installed you Jabber capable XMPP client, follow these steps to connect your SmartPhone jabber client to our SmarterMail server to chat to these clients.

NOTE: Since the SmarterMail XMPP CHAT is still in BETA, these are subject to change without notice.

Adium:

Follow these steps to connect SmarterMail chat to Adium:

  1. Open Adium
  2. Click the File menu and then click Add Accounts.
  3. Select Jabber and enter your SmarterMail username [your complete e-mail address] and password.
  4. Click the Personal tab.
  5. In the Alias field, enter what you want displayed as your name in chat.
  6. Click the Options tab.
  7. In the Connect Server field, enter your domain, such as example.com.
  8. Select the Allow plain text authentication checkbox.
  9. Click the Privacy tab.
  10. In the Encryption field, select Encrypt chats as requested.
  11. Save if necessary.


Digsby

Follow these steps to connect SmarterMail chat to Digsby:

  1. Open Digsby.
  2. Click the Digsby menu and then click My Accounts.
  3. Click the lightbulb icon (Jabber account) to add an XMPP connection.
  4. In the Jabber ID field, enter your SmarterMail username.  For example, user@example.com
  5. In the Password field, enter the password you use to log in to SmarterMail.
  6. Click Advanced.
  7. Select Use TLS if possible checkbox.
  8. Select the Ignore SSL warnings checkbox.
  9. Select the Allow plain text login checkbox.
  10. Click Save.


iChat

Follow these steps to connect SmarterMail chat to iChat:

  1. Open iChat.
  2. Click Preferences.
  3. Click the + button and enter your SmarterMail username and password.
  4. Click Server Settings.
  5. Uncheck the Warn before sending password insecurely checkbox.
  6. Select the Automatically find server and port checkbox.
  7. Save if necessary.

Pandion


Follow these steps to connect SmarterMail chat to Pandion:
  1. Open Pandion.
  2. Click Register a new instant messaging address.
  3. Enter your display name and click Next.
  4. In the Server Information field, enter your domain, such as example.com.
  5. Enter your SmarterMail username (i.e. jsmith) and password.
  6. Click Connection Settings.
  7. Enter the IP address of the SmarterMail server or, if records exist, you can enter the domain name (i.e., example.com).
  8. Select the Use TLS encryption if available checkbox.
  9. Click OK.


Pidgin

Follow these steps to connect SmarterMail chat to Pidgin:

  1. Open Pidgin.
  2. Click the Accounts menu and click Manage Accounts.
  3. Click Add.
  4. In the Protocol field, select XMPP.
  5. In the Username field, enter your SmarterMail username. For example, jsmith.
  6. In the Domain field, enter your domain, such as example.com.
  7. In the Password field, enter the password used to log in to SmarterMail.
  8. Select the Remember password checkbox.
  9. Click the Advanced tab.
  10. In the Connection Security field, select Use encryption if available.
  11. Select the Allow plain text auth over unencrypted streams checkbox.
  12. Click Add.


Trillian

Follow these steps to connect SmarterMail chat to Trillian:

  1. Open Trillian.
  2. Click the Trillian Preferences menu.
  3. Click Add a New Account and select Jabber/XMPP.
  4. Enter your SmarterMail username and password.
  5. Click Settings.
  6. Change the hostname information to reflect the IP address of the SmarterMail server or, if records exist, you can enter the domain name (i.e., example.com).
  7. Click Back.
  8. Click Connect.
  9. Close the Trillian preferences window.
